About Steven Logan
Although I have studied with a number of well known artists and have taken classes in drawing and painting at the Atlanta College of Art (now, SCAD, Atlanta) and Emory University, I am basically self-taught. While a class can introduce you to a variety of styles and techniques, it is only through trial and error that you learn to apply those techniques and develop your own style. An artist learns the craft by doing. What defines an artist is not the degrees held or the classes taken, but innate creativity and the number of miles put on a brush and the number of gallons of paint applied to canvas.
I began painting when I was fifty and now have been painting for over a decade. I found art, or it found me, in the midst of a busy career as an urban planner, while looking for a way to reduce stress. The amazing thing is that today my art produces, not relieves, stress!
Usually, I paint in acrylics, which, through experimentation with all of the painting media, I have found provides me with the broadest range of creative opportunities.
I love painting because it is the first and only activity I have ever pursued which I know I can never master! No matter how much I learn or how proficient I may become, I know there will always more to learn. Each new painting is another creative challenge.
While I have been in a number of solo exhibits, presented my work in numerous juried group exhibits, sold numerous paintings, and completed many commissions, none of that is really important. But it is important to me that you see my work. You are the final element in every painting that I do. Some of my paintings may speak to you and many will not, but whether they connect or not, until you look at it a painting is not complete! I hope you enjoy my work!
